Austin Newton, AKA NEWT, is a rapper and singer/songwriter from Cincinnati, Ohio best known for creating an eclectic blend of genres ranging from rap and alternative to pop and hard rock across his ever-growing catalogue of songs.
In 2024, NEWT released his debut album “DON’T LOOK BACK”, on which he took everything he learned from making his mixtape and turned it up to 11, while also introducing new sonic ideas into the mix. The lyrics can get more introspective (CAN’T DECIDE) and the production can get heavier (LOSING MYSELF), but that doesn’t mean NEWT can’t still have some fun (see CRIMINAL).
Later that year, NEWT released “Midwest No Good”, a tight, 7 track EP that feels like an ode to the Cincinnati-native’s home. While there are definitely tracks featured that feel right at home alongside tracks on his previous projects (Home 2 U, Coca Cola), some of “Midwest No Good’s” most intriguing moments are tracks like “Midwest Lullaby” and “Take Me To Light”, which feel like homages to bands like Title Fight and Cap’n Jazz who are staples of the Midwest Emo genre.
What’s NEWT going to do next? Who knows (we do lowkey)! But we do know that his music will be keeping us on our toes for a long time to come.
